Lovers, headless horsemen, and villagers who nap for decades converge in a diptych that feels like both magical realism and folkloric horror. In these two tales--Sleepy Hollow, or The Legend of the Headless Horseman, and Rip Van Winkle--we find the seeds of what would come to be known as American Gothic. These stories established Washington Irving as the first author of a truly American literature, because every newly formed nation needs new legends, new myths, new symbols--in short, its own distinct identity.
